Here's an interesting tidbit from the New York Times. 

As it turns out, the family wasn't so much about avoiding rioting and looting. The family of Brown itself demanded the protestors turn into rioters. This is simply how it goes. We won't encourage it, but those around us will.

"Disorder broke out moments after Mr. McCulloch announced that Mr. Wilson would not face charges for the Aug. 9 shooting.

Mr. Brown’s mother, Lesley McSpadden, and stepfather, Louis Head, stood with protesters outside the barricaded Ferguson police station as Mr. McCulloch made the decision public. As Ms. McSpadden cried, Mr. Head turned and yelled, with an expletive injected, “Burn this [bitch] down!”

By the way, CNN is still saying that it was "outside agitators."
